Information About Interviews and Status of Searches

For those who have had interviews and offers:

What was the typical lagtime between app deadline, being short-listed, and invited to campus? Are most places doing phone interivews or cutting right to campus visits?

I'm trying to get a sense of the general pace in our field, even though I know it varies by school.

My experience is that it has been really variable so far. One place set up the phone interview just a week after their deadline and then set up campus visits just a week after that. A few others did the same but with 2-3 weeks between each contact, and yet another directly invited me to visit w/out having had any previous contact with me (by phone or e-mail). BTW, so far this does not seem to correlate with size/prestige/location of the university either.

I've also heard from people on the market in previous years that after all the phone interviews were done, it typically took a few weeks to hear if you made the cut, and that you might only hear if you did make it (otherwise they might just send you a letter in the mail even later). Beyond that, it's really hard to tell what's going on, which is why the wiki is so useful!

November 15th deadline at a SLAC. Wiki says nothing's happening on this one. Too early to worry about not making the cut?

There was a post about this in the Chronicle forums. In general, people suggested a reasonable "deadline" for being contacted as Dec 24th. So I'm going to not freak out until then. My first (and only) phone interview call came almost a month after the app deadline.

But my advisor says that it's still early. Even within my university (2 job searches with the same app deadline), one committee pushed to get on campus interviews done before the holidays, but the other is still waiting for the new year. You can never tell.

Some places are moving rather quickly. It's a good idea to work on your job talk even if you don't have an invitation, so you're not caught off guard. I've gotten two invitations, and neither was preceded by a phone interview. One gave very little lead-time.

The lag time between deadlines and phone interviews varies, time between phone and campus interviews varies, and the time between campus visits and offers varies. If you get a phone interview, you should ask about their timeline...to get a good guideline for when to start getting anxious (at least more anxious).

As an update for Behavioral Neuroscience/Biological Psychology job seekers, I know that Kansas State has filled their position.

December 24 is not a realistic deadline for expecting to hear from schools. I was contacted in late January in a previous search and received an offer. Besides, some schools are obviously not interviewing until after the holidays. The wiki should help discriminate between early-interviewing schools and late-interviewing schools.

The campus interview I had was set up by email/phone two weeks after the application deadline. The interview took place three weeks after that.

Do SLACS tend to ask for job talks, teaching demos, or both?

Anonymous said...

Both, in my experience.

Anonymous said...

I think most if not all SLACs will ask for a standard job talk, but, in my experience, only some ask for a teaching demo.

What's the general feeling about state schools like Cal States or CUNYs? I feel that I have a good knowledge of what SLACs find desirable in a candidate and I have a good sense of what R1s value (since I'm receiving my degree from a large public R1), but not much about mid-sized state schools. How does one make him/herself more attractive to those? How long does it take for places like Cal States to invite candidates?

OK, rumormill, let's see what you know.

1. Smith College. Anyone heard?
2. UC Davis - accepted the developmental offer yet?
3. What about all those schools with job talks in early Nov. - any offers made?

Rumormill part 2:
Anyone know where any of the Cal State's are with regard to job offers? (i've checked the wiki and I'm hoping for more info than what's there:)

This is just torture. I got an offer from a place A yesterday. Place B that I really want to work at has already voted, and chances are I'm a backup person. Today I just got a telephone interview invitation for place C--for January. My preferences are A>C>B>no job at all. Geez. What should I do? Roll the dice or what?

Edit to previous post; apparently i'm too stressed for transitivity:

Does anyone have any info or the inside scoop on any of these places?

1) University of Iowa: personality/social position

2) Purdue (clinical or HDFS)

I heard through the grapevine that the UC Davis offer went to someone who was not a junior person (an associate professor?). But I don't know if they accepted.

A>C>B>No Job:

Worth trying two tactics: 1) see if B will give you some more time to decide and 2) see if C can do the phone interview now rather than later. Not much can be done about A except hope they can tell you soon. Good luck! Being in the >No Job position is a good place to be.

Anyone else finding it hard to wait between interviews and news about the next round? It's killing me.

Developmentalists who have applied for positions in HDFS/CDFS departments, don't forget to update the Family Studies wiki!

Very frustrating for places to not inform candidates, especially those on the shortlist, of where they are at in their hiring. Interviewees are always advised to bear in mind that the people we interview with are our colleagues with whom we will be interacting during our careers. I really wish hiring committees would keep this in mind too!

Any news on the following (checked the wiki, but I am hoping for more of an update)?
1. George Mason Biopsychology
2. CUNY Brooklyn-Neuroscience
3. Miami University (OH)- Beh. Neuro

Thanks. Good luck to all job hunters!

Does anyone feel like sharing regarding the Northern Illinois searches?

Anonymous said...

Anyone know about the New York University sensation/perception job? The deadline was way back in October...

Anonymous said...

NYU job candidates are posted on their website. It appears they have only started interviewing candidates for the social position so far.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if the University of Chicago Social Psych search was cancelled? On the department calendar there were three spots reserved for social job talks, and now one of those spots has a job talk scheduled for the developmental search, and the other two spots were deleted.

Case Western Cog Sci: Has anyone heard positive feedback? Or have only rejection letters gone out so far?

Anonymous said...

I haven't heard from Case Western. I figure no news is good news.

The Neuroscience Wiki says that Wright State's psych department will have interviews for their neuroscience position in Jan-Feb. It doesn't, however, show that anyone has had a phone interview. Any news on whether the search committee has contacted candidates?

Has anyone heard anything about the postdocs in affective science at Boston College? There should be a postdoc wiki.

Anonymous said...

Kudos to West Virginia's SC for correcting the wiki!

Anonymous said...

Is the wiki down for other users? I get an error message - not sure if it's a problem on my end or with the wiki.

It seems that the entire wikidot site was having problems earlier this morning, but it appears to be back up with no losses now.

Re: Iowa's social search-- they've interviewed and may have an offer out.

Anyone heard if UMass Amherst made an offer for the developmental or cognitive position?

Anonymous said...

For any of you who applied... I heard a rumor that the developmental position at Rider University in New Jersey has been filled. I don't want to put it on the wiki because I'm not 100% sure if it's true.

Anonymous said...

I heard a rumor (I know, I know) that the some of the George Mason psychology searches may have been cancelled. Does anyone have any news regarding these searches?

Anonymous said...

Solicitation of misc gossip:

Are all of the Cal State searches canceled due to budget cuts?

Any word from any CUNY searches?

Update on Wellesley?

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Cal State San Bernardino appears to be moving forward. Wellesley Neuroscience position is filled, not sure about other searches. No word from CUNY searches other than letters saying that they received materials. Good luck.

Hitting a couple of previous Qs:

Smith College has made their very short shortlist, interviews in late Jan/early Feb.

Miami-OH has made an offer.

Both of those are personal but second-hand knowledge (i.e. I know the candidates).

Any news about the status of the cognitive searches at Johns Hopkins and MIT?

Anonymous said...

What about Barnard or Skidmore?

Anonymous said...

MIT has been interviewing cognitive candidates over the last couple of weeks. Don't know about Johns Hopkins.

Anonymous said...

Barnard has made an offer

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard news about the postdoc at Amherst College?

Anonymous said...

I just got a rejection letter saying the Amherst position has been filled

Anonymous said...

March 12 8:55am here. I just got the Amherst rejection letter too. Along with the EEO form. Bummer.

Any news about the developmental position at the College of New Jersey?
